Everton fans protest outside Goodison after Carabao Cup exit

Southampton reached the Carabao Cup semi-finals for the first time in 11 years by beating Everton on penalties after a bad-tempered quarter-final at Goodison Park.

Takumi Minamino's first Southampton goal and a James Ward-Prowse penalty saw the visitors fight back from 1-0 and 2-1 down to earn a shootout against Manchester City.

Nathan Jones' team held their nerve to win 4-3 on penalties, as Kyle Walker-Peters scored the decisive spot-kick after James Tarkowski and Will Smallbone had earlier missed for the hosts.

Everton's miserable season continued, with the home fans turning on manager Frank Lampard after a sixth defeat in their last eight games.

There were ugly scenes at the end of the match, as supporters clashed with police and stewards, and one fan was arrested for throwing a smoke bomb towards the Southampton players as they celebrated.

The match had to be halted for a few minutes late on as the referee tried to calm things down, and there were further unsavory incidents after the final whistle.

Jones admitted he had never seen scenes like it at a football match before, but praised his players for keeping their focus and emerging victorious.

"It was an incredible night for us," said Jones.

"We showed great character to come back twice and then win on penalties.

"This is a big moment for us and we're delighted to be in the semi-finals."

Lampard admitted that Everton are in a "difficult moment", but vowed to fight on.

"I understand the fans' frustration," said Lampard.

"We're not in a good moment and we need to work hard to get out of it.

"I believe in this group of players and I'm confident that we can turn things around."
