A Historical and Geographical Overview

Pennsylvania, a constituent state of the United States, holds a prominent place in American history as one of the original 13 colonies. Officially known as the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania, it derives its nickname, "The Keystone State," from its geographical location as the keystone arch holding together the northeastern and southern states.

Geography

Located in the eastern portion of the United States, Pennsylvania encompasses an area of 119,283 square kilometers (46,054 square miles), ranking it as the 33rd largest state. It is bounded to the north by Lake Erie and New York, while its western border extends along Ohio and West Virginia. To the south, Maryland and Delaware form the state's boundaries, and to the east lies New Jersey.

Pennsylvania's diverse topography encompasses mountains, rolling hills, and fertile valleys. The Appalachian Mountains traverse the state from southwest to northeast, dividing it into eastern and western regions. The eastern part of the state is densely populated and dominated by cities such as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, and Allentown.

History

Pennsylvania has played a pivotal role in American history since its founding by William Penn in 1681. The state was a major center for the American Revolution and the birthplace of the Declaration of Independence. Philadelphia, the state's largest city, served as the temporary capital of the United States during the presidency of George Washington.
