A Historic Town With A Rich Past

Shaniko: Oregon's Ghost Town of the Year

A Historic Town with a Rich Past

Designated as Oregon's Ghost Town of the Year in 1959 by the Oregon Centennial Commission, Shaniko is a charming town that attracts visitors on weekends in August.

Located in Wasco County in north-central Oregon, Shaniko is situated at the intersection of US Route 97 and Oregon Route 218, approximately 69 miles north of Redmond. This former Wool Capital of the World was once known as Cross Hollows and is now a quaint and picturesque town with a rich history.

The Shaniko Oregon area was first settled by a pioneer named August Scherneckau. Later planned by bankers and businessmen in The Dalles, the town was named Shaniko after a Native American word meaning "place of the sun."

Shaniko was once a thriving railroad town, but its fortunes declined with the advent of the automobile. Today, Shaniko is a vibrant community with a population of around 30 people. The town is a popular destination for tourists who come to explore its historic buildings, visit its museums, and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the surrounding area.
